Western Tanzania, on Lake Tanganyika north of Kigoma

A narrow strip of forest along Lake Tanganyika, Gombe is where Jane Goodall began her landmark studies in 1960, and chimpanzee tracking here remains among the most intimate in Africa.

Forest walks also reveal colobus monkeys, baboons and a rich tapestry of birds and butterflies, in a forest still flourishing after decades of protection.
